Kumamon is something of a national treasure here. A bit like Chuck Norris for America, but with even more fishing capability. Translating roughly as ‘Bear-person’ in the local dialect, Kumamoto prefecture’s award winning mascot is adored by children all over Japan.
It looks like the fame may have finally got to him (think John Bearlushi), as he’s clearly wasted in this encounter with the Empress and Emperor. Look at him dancing and waving at miniature figurines of himself.
Jokes aside, Kumamon has brought relief and joy to many children around Japan, particularly since the devastation of the March 11th earthquake. May he keep dancing until pebbles grow into boulders lush with moss.
