After being mugged at knifepoint on December 26th, a woman successfully asked her mugger to give some of the money back.
The twenty-something year old victim/bargain hunter was in Nakano, Tokyo when a man armed with a knife told her “Get out all of your money and nothing will happen.”
She gave him a total of ￥3000 ($30) then optimistically asked “Could you give back ￥2000? I have a bill to pay.” The man thought for a second before replying, “Oh, really? I see,” and handed back the money, leaving himself with just ￥1000.
Mugging victims in the Tokyo area should note that refunds are unavailable and discounts can only be provided when requested at the point of transaction.
