A man in Fukuoka was shocked to learn that a homeless woman had been living undetected in his closet for over a year.
The man’s suspicions were raised after he noticed food disappearing from the fridge and, rather than just shrugging and blaming “drunk me” as most reasonable people would do, he decided to set up a series of security cameras linked to his phone. His amateur spy operation proved successful when he watched from work as a woman unknown to him wandered around his house.
He immediately contacted the police, believing her to be a burglar, but when officers arrived they discovered circumstances were much stranger than they appeared to be. After an exhaustive search of the property, a 58-year-old woman was found curled up nervously in a small bedding closet along with a thin futon and water bottles.
According to the woman, who has been charged with trespassing, she moved in a year ago when the door was left unlocked. She had not stolen any money or other items besides food, and says she had nowhere else to go.
