Finance Minister and former Prime Minister Taro Aso, who we have – without hyperbole – dubbed “The Dark Lord” because he obviously spends his downtime murdering kittens, is in the news again with more insensitive remarks about old people.
At an Upper House Committee hearing, Aso was quoted as saying, “I’m 73, going on 74, and I’ve never had a long stay in hospital… It’s not fair that the tax I pay covers all the medical expenses of slouches,” failing to note that those so-called slouches also pay taxes – including the pretty steep charges incurred when enrolling in Japan’s national health care system.
This appears to be another step in Aso’s long quest to turn Japan into some kind of dystopian Logan’s Run-esque society where the elderly are shipped off to die quietly in a space colony or something.
More and more, Aso these days appears to be some type of unholy hybrid-genetic meld of an American Tea Partier and Asian Darth Maul.
