Compare Maps of Tokyo from 1896 and the Present Day Side by Side

If you’ve ever wondered what your favourite areas of Tokyo looked like a hundred years ago – besides “less gigantic pieces of plastic” – we have a website for you. Konjaku Mappu, or Past and Present Maps, allows you to compare old maps of Tokyo side by side with present day Google Maps. They go back as far as 1896, but nine different time periods are available to select, allowing you to see exactly how Tokyo’s sprawling metropolis has developed over time.

Before you freak out over your inability to read the kanji names for places, note that the writing on the old maps is read from right to left.

In addition to Tokyo, also known as “the most satisfying city in the world,” a number of other Japanese locations are available here.
