Japan Wants a Robot Olympics for Tokyo 2020

If you’re tired of seeing flappy soft-tissued humans making pathetic attempts at competing in events ruined by safety restrictions pandering to participants’ mortality, then you’ll be happy to know that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is possibly going to offer an alternative.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe recently announced, “In 2020 I would like to gather all of the world’s robots and aim to hold an Olympics where they compete in technical skills.” He didn’t give any more details of what he meant by “technical skills,” but we’re hoping it’s more Taekwondo technical than impressive cross-stitch technical.

Unfortunately, Abe’s vision isn’t solely about robotic death machines glorifying in destruction for our entertainment. It’s understood that developing robots capable of assisting humans in responding to disasters are a priority, and while visiting robot production facilities in Saitama he was also reported as saying, “We would like to set up a council on making a robotic revolution a reality in order to aid Japan’s growth.”
